Author's Comments

I have a component stereo. When I was in middle school, I bought it using the better method of saving up money from deliving newspapers and used it for more than ten years. Recently, it's condition has gotten very bad. I've thought about buying a replacement, but even if I buy a cool recent one I'll probably remember the one I've been so used to... When I think of that, I can't buy a replacement. My point is, I'm talking about chatter marks.

General Overview

Ichigo, Uryuu, Orihime, Chad, and Yoruichi manage to enter Soul Society, or more specifically Rukongai, which is the area that normal souls live. To rescue Rukia they need to enter the Court of Pure Spirits, which is where the shinigami live. Ichigo immediatelly rushes off to go there, but is blocked when the spiritual wall and Hakutou Gate appear. After a quickly beating Jidanbou, the gate guardian, in a one on one fight, Ichigo gains entrance for himself and the others. However, when Jidanbou opens the gate for them Gin Ichimaru, captain of the 3rd division is standing on the other side. Gin quickly slices off Jidanbou's left arm and once he recognizes Ichigo, releases his soul cutter Shinsou to attack Ichigo. Ichigo manages to survive the attack uninjured, but both he and Jidanbou get pushed back from the gate, allowing it to close shut.

After Orihime reattaches Jidanbou's arm to his body everyone gathers in the house of the area's leader so they can discuss what they're doing next. Since the defenses will be dramatically increased at Hakutou Gate now and the other gates are too far away, Yoruichi plans on entering the Court of Pure Spirits without using a gate with the help of someone named Kuukaku Shiba, but first they need to locate Kuukaku, who is somewhat of a drifter. But before they can figure out where to go Ichigo begins fighting someone named Ganjuu, but the fight ends prematurely when Ganjuu realizes he's late for something.

They finally find Kuukaku's place out in the country. Kuukaku turns out to be a woman with a stump for her right arm. After hearing their story she agrees to help on the condition that they take her little brother along. That little brother turns out to be Ganjuu and he and Ichigo immediately resume their fight. Eventually Kuukaku jumps in to get them to stop. Once things have calmed down she takes them to a special room and explains that she is Rukongai's best fireworks maker and that she plans to get them into the Court of Pure Spirits via the sky.

Meanwhile in the Court of Pure Spirits Rukia is moved to a new cell in the Shrine of Penitence, which is where those who are to be executed are held. Rukia doesn't really react to any of this, however, until Renji tells her that a shinigami with orange hair and a soul cutter as long as he is tall was sighted. After he leaves the Shrine of Penitence Renji is approached by Sousuke Aizen, captain of the 5th division. Aizen confides that he suspects there is a conspiracy involved with Rukia's sentence because there are many things about it that are unprecidented. However, the conversation is interrupted when there's a call for a meeting involving all captains and lieutenants of the 13 Gotei Divisions.

This chapter starts with Renji and his underling in Soul Society listening to an alarm going off because of intruders. Next it's the title page: Ichigo, Ishida, Inoue, and Chad sitting, but all ready for battle. Since Renji and his underling were on break, Renji orders the underling to go get Zabimaru.

In Dangai, Ishida and Ichigo are horrified to see the sludge-walls collapsing just behind them. Yoruichi tells them to run faster if they have time to look back, but then Ishida's cape gets snatched by the current. Ichigo moves to slice him free, but Yoruichi warns that if he uses it the current will snatch it (as its part of Ichigo's soul) and he'll be stuck. Chad solves the problem by ripping off Ishida's cape and for the remainder of their short trip in Dangai carries Ishida slung over his shoulder. Ishida, who has a prime view behind now, notices something emerging out of the current. It turns out to be seimichio, which looks like a train of sorts. It's used to clean out Dangai every 7 days. They near the exit, but unfortunately seimichio looks like it will catch them first. Then Inoue uses the Shun Shun Rikka to make a shield and buy them enough time to get out. She's lucky only the shield touched seimichio, though, or else she would have gotten stuck, so Yoruichi scolds her.

When the smoke clears from their landing, they see what looks like an old Japanese village. Yoruichi explains that it's the outskirts of Rukongai, where normal souls live. It surrounds the Court of Pure Spirits, which is where the shinigami live. Rukongai is the poorest area of Soul Society and holds the most souls. But there's not a soul in sight on the streets. As soon as Ichigo spots the Court of Pure Spirits he runs off to go there, before Yoruichi can warn him not to. Then a large wooden wall with a gate drops from the sky, blocking off access to the Court of Pure Spirits. When the smoke from the gate's appearance clears, it reveals an giant-sized gatekeeper.

The last page shows Renji's underling returning from fetching Zabimaru. He apologizes for dirting it by using it to cut some food up, and gets hit by Renji's teacup right in the face as a reward.

Inside the Court of Pure Spirits, the shinigami realize the intruders must have landed right in front of Hakutou Gate, the west gate, which is guarded by Jidanbou. So, they figure Jidanbou can handle it so they don't need to worry.

Jidanbou, meanwhile, swings a huge axe at Ichigo, but not with the intention of attacking. He tells Ichigo to attack him. The title page shows a map of the basic layout of Soul Society, including the four gates, Rukia's location, the location of the shinigami, and the location of Jidanbou and the intruders.

Yoruichi then explains to Ishida who Jidanbou is: an elite of Soul Society and guardian of Hakutou Gate. They need to defeat him to get into the Court of Pure Spirits, but he's been guarding it 300 years and hasn't been defeated once yet. Yoruichi thinks they need to go about things intelligently and calls Ichigo over to work out a plan, but instead Chad and Orihime run off to help Ichigo. However, they're stopped in their tracks by an attack from Jidanbou. It turns out he did that to make a wall of earth between them and Ichigo. Jidanbou is a stickler for manners, and his top three are 1) wash your hands when you get home, 2) don't eat food that's fallen on the ground, and 3) duels are between only 2 people. He wants Orihime and Chad to wait quietly while he fights Ichigo. Chad has other ideas, though, and plans on punching a hole through the wall of earth so Orihime can help Ichigo, but Jidanbou has good enough ears to overhear. Then Ichigo tells them it's ok and he'll take Jidanbou alone. After that he unwraps Zangetsu and Jidanbou asks if he's ready. Ichigo replies that he didn't ask him to wait. Jidanbou, who was doing it due to good manners, complains that Ichigo ought to be grateful he waited and attacks. Chad realizes what Urahara had been doing with Ichigo for 5 days after Ichigo had regained his power was to try to give Ichigo as much battle experience as possible. Meanwhile, Ichigo managed to parry Jidanbou's attack, complaining that he wasn't ready and that Jidanbou wasn't being curteous.

The last page shows Renji running off while his underling tells him to take it easy.

After Ichigo has blocked Jidanbou's attack Jidanbou begins laughing happily because it's been a long time since someone has been able to block him. He decides to use all of his strength, saying only 3 other people have been able to block his attack, but none of them were able to block his second. He moves to attack again. Then it's the title page: Ichigo looking smug with a wrapped Zangetsu resting on his shoulders behind his neck.

However, Ichigo managed to block even the second attack, which makes Jidanbou even happier. He then does a ten hit combo, but has trouble counting to ten. Ichigo escapes unscathed and says it's his turn. But then Jidanbou says he's not finished and whips out a second axe. Then he starts his final attack, but before he can really get going Ichigo destroys his axes.

The last page shows Ishida getting hit in the face with an axe fragment.

In the process of destorying Jidanbou's axes, Ichigo makes Jidanbou topple over backwards. The title page shows Ichigo just after destroying Jidanbou's axes.

At first everyone is stunned and don't realized what happened. In fact Jidanbou doesn't realize his axes are broken until after he gets up, gloats that he's not really defeated, and moves to attack again. He then starts crying over the destroyed axes, so Ichigo feels bad and apologizes. This makes Jidanbou feel worse, though, because he's there crying like a baby over the axes, while Ichigo is so generous that he's trying to comfort a foe he just defeated in battle. Jidanbou admits his first defeat in 300 years and gives them permission to enter the gate. (Here Ishida gets a bit angry since Jidanbou assumes Ichigo is their boss). But when Jidanbou uses his strength to open the massive gate he's in for a nasty surprise: waiting on the other side is Gin Ichimaru, captain of the 3rd division.

Gin says that Jidanbou shouldn't let them in even if he was defeated and cuts off Jidanbou's left arm.

The last page shows a hand (possibly Gin's given its position) and some drops of something (maybe blood?)

Poor Jidanbou's arm falls onto some buildings, crushing them and spraying blood everywhere. He's bleeding profusely and is having trouble holding up the gate. Everyone else wonders in horror exactly what Gin did. The title page shows Gin smilling with his eyes shut as blood splatters down on him.

Jidanbou is forced to kneel in order to hold up the gate one handed, but Gin is impressed he can hold it at all. Yoruichi thinks they were careless to not expect Gin to be there. Although Ichigo and the others are strong, they're nowhere near as strong as a captain. Jidanbou then explains that he lost so it's duty to open the gate. Gin, however, disagrees with that and says if a gate guardian loses, he gets killed. But Ichigo interrupts with an attack that Gin parries and then they separate. Yoruichi is horrified by that turn of events as Ichigo swings Zangetsu at Gin and asks what he's doing. Ichigo then tells Inoue to look after Jidanbou and that he'll fight Gin if he's so eager that he has to attack someone who's unarmed. Gin then asks if Ichigo is afraid of him (of course Ichigo isn't) and Yoruichi shouts for him to stop it. When Gin hears Ichigo's name he recognizes it (in conjunction with the huge soul cutter and orange hair). He then increases the distance between them as he says he definitely can't let them pass now. It turns out Gin's soul cutter Shinsou, which is a short sword in its sealed form, lengthens at lightning speeds when released, so its attacks are effectively like getting shot by a gun. Ichigo manages to deflect Shinsou's tip, but it shoves him back into Jidanbou and pushes them both away from the gate. As the gate closes, Gin can be seen waving goodbye to them.

The last page shows Gin walking off as Renji watches in the shadows.

Everyone rushes over to Ichigo to see if he's ok, and he suddenly sits up, complaining that the attack hurt and nearly killed him. But despite his complaints he doesn't seem hurt that bad. Ishida is impressed that Ichigo is still alive and wonders if Zangetsu was what saved him. Ichigo apologizes to Yoruichi that the gate closed because of him, but Yoruichi says it was ok. Since Gin is a captain, the results could have been much worse - Ichigo could have gotten severely injured.

After that they realize the Rukongai inhabitants have finally come out of hiding. It turns that Yuuichi Shibata is among the residents. Upon recognizing Chad, he pushes through the crowd to greet them. The title page shows Karin and Yuzu playing with dolls. Karin has a robot dressed up in a kimono, while Yuzu has Kon dressed up in a kimono and wig, sweating profusely.

With the help of the locals, they manage to bring Jidanbou's arm back to him so that Orihime can use the Shun Shun Rikka to heal him. While she's doing this Ichigo hears that the residents of Rukongai don't like shinigami, but they did like Jidanbou because he was always kind and polite to them. Once Ichigo stuck up for Jidanbou against Gin, they realized they must be ok, too, and so the locals came out after the battle ended.

Chad, meanwhile, is walking around with Shibata on his shoulders when Hironari Horiuchi, Shibata's adopted brother, shows up and tells him to come home. Chad learns that most people in Rukongai live in adopted families because it's extremely unusual for someone to meet a person they know from a previous life. Rukongai is very large and souls are assigned to a certain area by a ticket (which souls receive when they arrive at Soul Society). Where you are assigned to is pretty arbitrary, as Hironari illustrates when he points out he died decades ago far from where Shibata died. Shibata still hadn't managed to find his mother, but Chad tells him not to give up and eventually he'll find her.

Orihime, meanwhile, is still busying healing Jidanbou late into the night (though his arm looks much better and is mostly reattached to his body). To keep herself occupied she daydreams Ichigo in a prince's outfit, but is startled out of it when Ichigo comes to give her a drink. She says she'll be done healing Jidanbou soon, but "soon" ends up being in 5 hours, so some Rukongai residents pester her into taking a break, saying she's done enough. Inoue takes their adlieutenant and then she and Ichigo go inside the house, where Ishida, Chad, and Yoruichi already are. They then start talking strategy.

Since they already broke into Hakutou Gate once, the security there will have increased dramatically so they have to use another way in. It'd take way too long to get to another gate, so Yoruichi plans to get in without using a normal entrance. He then asks the leader of the area where Kuukaku Shiba is. The elder is shocked to hear that name as Yoruichi explains Kuukaku used to live in the area, but is a bit of a drifter so Yoruichi doesn't know exactly where Kuukaku is currently. The leader is about to tell them something when someone crashes through the door, followed by a boar. Apparently the gatecrasher, who's named Ganjuu, had been thrown off while riding the boar. As soon as Ganjuu notices Ichigo, though, he starts picking a fight with him because Ichigo's a shinigami.

The last page shows Shibata telling Chad to come visit again if he ever comes back to Rukongai.

With all the poking and prodding Ganjuu does to Ichigo's face it's little wonder Ichigo takes the bait and they start fighting. Ganjuu tries to make himself look more impressive by giving himself all sorts of titles. The title page shows Ganjuu making the peace sign in the background with Ichigo looking annoyed in the foreground.

Ganjuu then shoulders Ichigo out of the building, where we meet the other 4 members of Ganjuu's gang, all of them riding boars. Ganjuu then tells Ichigo to leave because he won't allow a shinigami to be in West Rukongai, but Ichigo ignores that and kicks him in the face. Yoruichi tells Ichigo to stop wasting energy on a useless fight, but Ichigo complains that Ganjuu started it and won't back down. Yoruichi is not pleased. The leader tries to tell Ganjuu that Ichigo's a good shinigami, but Ganjuu won't hear of it. To him there are no good or bad shinigami. He then charges at Ichigo, so Chad tosses Ichigo Zangetsu. Ganjuu then draws a stubby cut-off sword and they clash blades. But instead of fighting with that, Ganjuu uses a weird kind of magic that turns the ground under Zangetsu into sand and then shoves Zangetsu in it down to the hilt. He then kicks at Ichigo's head, but Ichigo just barely manages to dodge it. However, even without Zangetsu, Ichigo manages to beat Ganjuu using karate moves to block kicks and punches. Now angry, Ganjuu tries to swipe at Ichigo with the sword, but Ichigo deftly disarms him and punches his face. When Ganjuu regains his feet with a bloody noise, the fight is interrupted by one of the gang members, who says he has bad news.

We left Ichigo off last time as he was about to be squashed by Ganjuu's raging boar after he discovered he was late for something. But that distances are deceiving in anime. Bonnie-chan actually managed to clear Ichigo easily and instead kicked Ganjuu about 30 feet. After that Ganjuu asks her to let him ride her, and she butts him onto her back and runs off after saying they'll continue the fight the next day so wait for him. Ichigo is about to chase after when he gets trampled by the rest of the gang chasing after Ganjuu. The title page is Orihime in a 70s type picture.

The next day, Ichigo is determined to wait for Ganjuu (he doesn't want Ganjuu to think he chickened out of the fight.) Ishida starts trying to drag Ichigo out of the house, but Ichigo is being really stubborn, but Yoruichi solves the problem by scratching Ichigo's face and sets his priorities straight (first save Rukia from getting executed, then fight Ganjuu).

Next we see Ichigo and company walking along a dirt road. After some quibbling about whether they're heading in the right direction or how they'll know their destination, they spot it: a traditional-style Japanese house with a huge chimney and a pair of huge arms holding up a banner that says Kuukaku's name (which horrifies Ishida and Ichigo). As they walk to the house, Ishida wonders what's up with its chimney and then he notices the top of it is sealed. They're nearly stopped by two guards until the guards notice Yoruichi.

One of the guards guides them to Kuukaku, whom they're startled to discover is a young woman (that looks a bit like a punk) missing her right arm. Everyone but Yoruichi is startled to see that. Kuukaku asks why the kids are there and then Yoruichi says they need a favor that might be troublesome. Kuukaku replies that she loves trouble. After they explain the situation Kuukaku agrees to help, but says she'll be sending her younger brother with them. He turns out to be Ganjuu.

    Released Soul Cutters - Zangetsu
Relevant Terminology - artificial body, captain, dual terminus, shinigami

We start by seeing Rukia in her cell and the doors open. She asks Renji if her sentence has been moved forward and he tells her she'll be killed in 14 days and use of the dual terminus (used for executions) has been approved. So, Rukia is going to be transfered to the Shrine of Penitence. Renji is there with guards to take her to her new cell.

While Renji and the guards are taking Rukia to her new cell Rukia's face is covered by a white cloth and the four guards are each holding poles with a red string attached to a collar around Rukia's neck. When they reach their destination, the cloth and strings are removed (though not the collar). After explaining that she's supposed to repent by staring at the execution ground, they release the rope binding her hands and it retracts into her collar. Then the guards leave. But first Renji approaches Rukia and lets her know that there's an unconfirmed report that five intruders entered Soul Society the day before and that one of them was an orange haired shinigami with a sword as tall as he is tall. This finally gets a reaction from Rukia. We then see the title page - Rukia gagged and behind bars.

Next we see Renji walking next to a house thinking about Rukia. He thinks she was more alive than he's seen her in days, and is glad he didn't tell he heard it from Gin and that Gin has probably killed Ichigo. He's spotted by Sousuke Aizen. Aizen asks Renji if he thinks Rukia should die after ascertaining that they were close. Renji evades the question and Aizen points out it's strange the way the authorities are dealing with Rukia's crimes of lending her powers to someone and exceeding her time limit on earth. First the immediate confiscation of Rukia's artificial body, then the revocation order, then the reduction of her grace period from 35 days to 25 days, and the use of the dual terminus on someone who isn't a captain, all of which are unprecidented. Aizen suggests everything is moving according to one will, and seems to imply he may be killed, but is interrupted when there's an announcement for an emergency meeting of all division commands.

Back at Kuukaku's, Kuukaku forcefully knocks out both Ichigo and Ganjuu to separate them and stop the fight. After that she yells at Ganjuu and Ichigo gets so scared he apologizes, which she accepts. He comments to Ganjuu that she's scary, and Ganjuu agrees. Kuukaku then orders the guards to take care of some preparations. She then leads everyone else to the base of the chimney and says she's going to use it to send them to the Court of Pure Spirits. She's going to send them via the sky since she's Rukongai's best fireworks maker.

    Differences in episodes 23:
    • Some of the events in this chapter are interspersed with the events of chapter 78.
    • During Aizen's and Renji's conversation the anime shows shots of Ichimaru Gin and the dual terminus.
    • Kuukaku has a fake right arm in the anime.
    • In the anime Kuukaku jumps in to end Ichigo's and Ganju's fight because one of them knocks her pipe out of her hands and crushes it.
