Author's Comments

A little earlier I somehow lost my mind and for the first time in my life bought a suit. It's a black suit designed to work with a cummerbund. In other words, before I worried about things like cummerbunds I recently realized that there's no opportunity for me to wear it.

General Overview

As a translation note, Orihime's name has a Chinese character that means "princess" in it, while Tatsuki's name has a Chinese character that means "dragon" in it. So, the chapters entitled "Princess & Dragon" refer to the two of them.

It turns out Uryuu Ishida knew both Rukia and Ichigo were shinigami because their spirit threads were red instead of white. After school that day, Uryuu Ishida challenges Ichigo to a fight. Since Rukia is at Urahara's Store to ask Kisuke Urahara about quincy, she had extracted Kon from the plushie earlier in the day so Ichigo could change into a shinigami on his own, which he does. However, Ishida's challenge is different than Ichigo expected: he wants to see who can kill the highest amount of hollows in 24 hours by luring them with hollow bait. Ichigo doesn't like this idea, but Ishida activates the hollow bait by crushing it. This infuriates Ichigo, who's worried about innocents getting hurt. Ichigo runs off to try protect Karin, who he knows will be targetted, but sends Kon to find Rukia and get the denreishinki from her so he can track hollows. As Ichigo leaves Ishida comments that Ichigo's family aren't the only people around him that are in danger.

Rukia, meanwhile, learned from Urahara that quincy who can see ghosts, hollows, and shinigami and trained to fight hollows. But unlike shinigami, who merely purify hollows and send them to Soul Society, Qunicy kill them outright and so were destroyed over 200 years ago. At this point everyone notices cracks in the sky forming because of the hollow bait.

Chad gets targetted by one of the hollows gathering in Karakura, but can only see a haze where it is. He runs into Karin and after asking his abuelo for strength, his right arm grows armor and he's able to see clearly. Some sort of power shoots out of his right arm when he punches the hollow, killing it, but afterwards Chad collapses. Karin goes to get Isshin to treat him.

Another hollow attacks the students still at Karakura High, including Tatsuki Arisawa and Orihime Inoue by shooting seeds out of its head into them and using those seeds to take over their bodies. For a time Tatsuki protects Orihime from their classmate-zombies, but ends up getting hit by a seed straight in her head. When Orihime says she wants to protect Tatsuki this time her hairpins flash and turn into the Shun Shun Rikka. Using them she's able to deflect an attack by the hollow, heal Tatsuki, and defeat the hollow, but then she, too, collapses. Afterwards Kisuke Urahara and Tessai Tsukabishi show up carrying Chad.

Ishida again repeats that he hates shinigami, but to make things clear this time, he explains that this means he hates Ichigo.

Later Tatsuki and Orihime are looking at the finals ranking and Ishida is number 1, Ryou is number 2, and Inoue is number 3 (the title page). Tatsuki congratulates her by patting her head. Michiru and Chizuru are there as well, and are surprised Orihime did that well. They then start discussing how Ryou is smart, was the class representative at their entrance ceremony, and is entering national competitions for the track team. Tatsuki then reveals she's entering national competitions for the karate team and they're really impressed.

Meanwhile Keigo and Mizuiro are proud that neither they or any of their friends have gotten in the top 50... that is until they realize Ichigo is number 23. They say to Chad they're not going to invite Ichigo out anymore because of his ranking, but then Chad points out that he's number 11. At that Keigo and Mizuiro freak out and say they won't hang out with either Chad or Ichigo anymore.

Ichigo is really more concerned with Ishida, though. He's angry because Ishida said that to a complete stranger and was meddling with Ichigo's job. But, Ichigo is really bad with names so he can't remember Ishida's full name. As he's trying to remember, Inoue shows up and says what about Ishida. Immediately after that she points out his name on the ranking list. It turns out he's even in Ichigo's class, but Ichigo's also bad enough with faces that he didn't remember that either. He notes that Inoue seems familar with Inoue and she replies that Ishida's also in the handicraft club. They then peer into the classroom to see him whip out his travel sewing kit and fix up a bizarre plushie for Michiru. When Michiru thanks him, Ishida replies that it was nothing, and Inoue notes he'd be nice if he didn't talk like that. She then asks Ichigo what happened with Ishida and he tells her it was nothing.

After school Ishida is walking home, but realizes Ichigo is following him without even turning around. In fact he knew Ichigo was following him since he and Inoue were peering in the classroom because of Ichigo's inability to restrain his spiritual power. Ichigo, on the other hand, doesn't seem able to sense other people's spiritual strength because he didn't notice Uryuu at all until he introduced himself. Ishida, on the other hand, noticed Ichigo's spiritual strength as soon as he met him, knew Rukia was a shinigami the moment he met her, and realized Ichigo became a shinigami in May. He then summons spirit threads and explains that a shinigami's spirit thread is red. He then explains that he's a quincy, or a human that kills hollows, and he challenges Ichigo to a fight to prove shinigami aren't needed.

At the same time, Rukia has just reached Urahara's Store.

The last scene shows Michiru blushing because Ishida fixed her plushie.

Ishida repeats his challenge to Ichigo to prove shinigami aren't necessary. We then see the title page, Urahara smoking a pipe on a cloudy moonlit night.

At Urahara's store, Jinta and Ururu are playing rocks, paper, sissors (Ururu's winning) to determine who sweeps up, but Jinta refuses to stop up until he wins. Tessai puts an end to this by picking and lifting Jinta above his head, which is when Rukia arrives and kicks Tessai from behind, but hurts her foot instead of hurting him. She asks to see Urahara and as soon as he shows up she chucks her denreishinki in his face because he hasn't been answering her calls. Jinta asks why Ichigo isn't with her and she says he's probably getting into trouble. She does have some questions to ask Urahara, though.

Back with Ichigo, he thinks Ishida's proposal of a challenge ridiculous. He has nothing to prove because there's no way Ishida could beat him. But Ishida manages to goad Ichigo into it by accusing Ichigo of not being able to do anything without Rukia's permission since he's a temporary shinigami that got his powers from Rukia.

Urahara, meanwhile, starts telling Rukia about quincy. They were humans that specialized in killing hollows, but they were wiped out over 200 years. Quincy were much like Ichigo - humans who could see hollows, so they trained to kill hollows. But there was a critical difference between them and shinigami: shinigami purify hollows and send them to Soul Society by cutting them with a soul cutter. Quincy simply kill them. This is what led to their destruction.

We then see a flashback of Rukia extracting Kon from the plushie just in case Ichigo needs to change into a shinigami later because she won't be around. Ichigo then swallows Kon-the-pill so he can turn into a shinigami. He then asks for the rules of the fight, but it's different that what he thought. Ishida takes out some hollow bait and says that whoever takes care of more hollows in 24 hours is the winner. Ichigo really dislikes that idea because it will put normal people in danger, but before Ichigo can stop him Ishida crushes the hollow bait, saying he'll destroy every hollow that comes so there's nothing to worry about.

The last scene shows Kon in Ichigo's body feeling uncomfortable because of the tense atmosphere between Ichigo and Ishida.

This chapter starts with a map of the Kantou area of Japan (basically the area surrounding Tokyo). Karakura is there and sout of there in Yokohama, there's Don Kanonji, who seems like he may have sensed Ishida crushing the hollow bait.

Next we show a shot of the sky about Karakura. A crack forms there and something begins to emerge from the crack. It's a hollow, which is immediately shot by Ishida. Immediately after that Ichigo grabs Ishida by the collar and tells him to undo the hollow bait. But Ishida can't do anything and tells him if he wants to protect as many people as possible he ought to run. When Ishida points out that hollows target those with dense souls, Ichigo immediately thinks of Karin and runs off with Kon in tow. As they leave Ishida remarks that Ichigo hasn't realized his family aren't the only ones close to him that have high spiritual abilities. But Ishida is confident he'll be able to protect everyone and prove how poor Ichigo's abilities are. Then we see the title page: Ichigo pulling his lower lip down while wearing a collared shirt, wristband, and what looks like a loose blindfold that's hanging just under his eyes.

At Karakura High, Tatsuki is taking a break from karate practice. Her team is psyched for the nationals and she's in her best form, but lately she's been lethargic because she can see ghosts. Orihime shows up and wants to talk to Tatsuki about something. Tatsuki zones out as she thinks she started seeing them 2 months ago when she went to Orihime's apartment. She hardly remembers anything besides having trouble breathing and Rukia being there. She thought it was a dream until Orihime admitted to seeing the same thing. After that they started out fuzzy but slowly came into focus after a few days and she confirmed when they went to see "Ghost Bust" at the abandoned hospital. She's then distracted by a ghost teasing her, and Inoue isn't able to get her point across before they hear the sound of glass breaking - all of the first floor windows had broken. Both of them rush off to check it out, but not before Orihime stares at the crack in the sky.

Meanwhile, Ichigo's fighting through hollows as he tries to figure out where Karin might be. School's already out so she's out somewhere playing, but he's not sure where. He's frustrated with his reaction time and not being able to detect hollows well and realizes up until now he's relied on the denreishinki to detect them. So, he tells Kon to go get it from her. Kon doesn't leave until Ichigo threatens him, though.

Ishida, on the other hand, is busy shooting hollows as soon as he can draw his bow. Others have also noticed what's going on: Chad is spaced out as he walks down the street with some friends, Urahara is staring up at the sky, and Don Kanonji jerks around in the middle of a makeup session for his TV show. Karin is so busy staring at the sky, that she's not paying attention to the soccer game she's playing with her friends.

The last page shows a short description of Karin's friends.

Ishida is drawing his bow, Ichigo is swinging his soul cutter, and Urahara suddenly looks up. Rukia asks what's wrong, but just then her denreishinki goes off. But by the time she's taken it out of her pocket to look at it the signal has disappeared. She attributes it to Ichigo being efficient, but just as she's putting it away, it goes off again. And almost as quickly the signal disappears, only to set off again. She wonders if it's really broken because hollows wouldn't come at this pace, but she's shocked when she looks at the screen: there are currently 15 hollows in the area and the number is quickly rising. She runs outside and notices the crack in sky. Totally shocked, she wonders what's up with the sky, the spiritual disturbance, and what's going on. Urahara is still inside, staring down at the floor with a frown, perhaps sad, perhaps guilty, perhaps just thoughtful. For the title page it shows the crack in the sky.

Chad, meanwhile, is still very spaced out and staring at the sky and gets yelled at by his friends because the lunchtime service is going to end soon and they'll have to pay more. He's still distracted by the sky, though, and wonders where he's felt this before. His friend then does a double kick (ie with both legs) on his head to get his attention. The friend then yells at him, saying he doesn't make much money and can't afford to be carefree with it like Chad, as a student, can. As he's going on about his spending habits, a hollow emerges from the crack in the sky and lands directly behind Chad. The friends think it's a gas explosion, but to Chad the area where the hollow looks hazy so he's sure something's there. As Chad is trying to figure out where he's sensed this before and his friends recover, the hollow makes a grab for him, and he pushes his friends out of the way. He then tells his friends to run as the hollow takes another swipe. Realizing that it's targetting him, Chad takes off. His plan is to go to a desserted area so no one gets hurt while he figures out what's going on.

At the vacant lot Karin and friends are playing soccer, but they yell at her for spacing out and missing kicks when she kicks the ball straight into one of their faces. Karin decides to call it quits because of the weird atmosphere and starts heading home to take a bath and go to sleep. But she runs into Chad at the entrance to the lot and recognizes him as Ichigo's friend with the parakeet. Chad recognizes her as Ichigo's little sister, but they have no time for niceties as Chad shields her from a swipe of the hollow. Unlike Chad, Karin can see it clearly.

The last scene shows someone clenching their fist, asking to be granted strength.

Karin's friends are debating what to do now that she's left when they notice something going on near the entrance to the vacant lot. For the title page it shows Chad shirtless with a very stylized picture in the background.

After Chad got Karin out of harm's way and the hollow stops. Chad can't see it well enough to tell what it's doing, but then Karin asks what it is. Chad asks her if she can see it clearly, and Karin responds she can see it as clear as day. Chad turns to look at her and the hollow attacks while Karin shouts a warning. He dodges barely in time but the hollow has moved and he's lost track of it. Karin asks him where he's looking and says to run because it's to their right. She then asks if Chad can see it, and when he responds that he can see it a little she decides to act as his eyes. Chad doesn't like the idea that much, but Karin says she's seen such monsters before and wonders what they have to do with Ichigo. But they're unable to discuss that further because of the hollow's attacks. Chad manages to land a punch on the hollow's arm, but it doesn't do much good. Soon after he dodges too late and gets beamed right on the head and knocked out. Karin's friends come running to ask if she's ok, and mistakenly think she's been fighting with the bloody and unconscious Chad. Karin tells them to run away, but they don't like her tone of voice and won't listen, so Karin ends up jumping her friends to try to save them.

Meanwhile, Chad has a flashback to his grandfather saying that Chad is big, strong, and different so he'll be persecuted, but he has to be kind and find out why he has such large, strong fists. Chad then says he knows why: not to cause pain, but to protect others. He then asks his grandfather to lend him some strength. Next we see the hollow taking a huge blow. In fact its left arm got completely taken off. When the smoke clears we see Chad standing, his right arm covered in some huge black armor.

The last page shows Karin's friends sitting on the ground saying she left and doesn't care about them at all. They wonder who that huge guy was.

The title page shows Tatsuki, Orihime, Uryuu, Rukia, Uchigo, and Chad playing sports (plus one more person, but we don't see this person's face). Orihime is a cheerleader and Rukia's playing soccer, but it's hard to tell what everyone else is doing.

When the smoke clears Karin asks Chad what's with his arm, but Chad doesn't have time to reply since the hollow may be armless, but it's still alive. Chad immediately charges it and lands a superpunch (which explodes on contact) with his right arm on the hollow's head. Karin is startled because Chad aimed right for it and wonders if he can see it now. Chad gives her a thumbs up (which she thinks is cliche and uncool) and then he collapses. As Karin runs to him, Chad thinks that he doesn't understand what happened. Suddenly he had armor on his arm and something blasted from it when he punched the monster, which he was able to see clearly. When Karin comes up to him he asks if anyone got hurt, and she says he was the only one, which he's glad about. Karin isn't, though, and kicks him for saying that. She says he's just like Ichigo that way and she hates that attitude. Afterwards she runs off to get her dad to treat Chad and tells him to wait there. Chad thinks she's just like Ichigo in the way they kick.

At Karakura High Chizuru and Tatsuki are cleaning up glass. They complain that if they had known it was just the judo club fighting that broke the windows they wouldn't have come since now they have to help clean up. However, all of them claimed to not have done it, except one who said his arm did it by itself. After they start arguing, Chizuru decides she's had enough cleaning and tells Orihime, who's standing with a dustpan not helping, to leave Tatsuki to clean up and go home with her. Orihime doesn't answer, though, and Chizuru asks Orihime what's wrong since she's spacing out more than usual. She makes a pass at Orihime and she and Tatsuki start to argue again, when suddenly Orihime says there's a TV show she wants to watch so everyone should go home. Tatsuki and Chizuru are confused. As Orihime pushes them away from the school, we can see a tentacled hollow on the roof of the school.

Orihime thinks that once she realized she was the only one that could see the monster on the roof, she immediately thought they had to get away. In fact she was so panicked that it was all she could think of. But so she wouldn't panic the others, she decided to pretend it wasn't there.

The title page is a map of Karakura showing where all of the characters are currently. Chad is currently in the southeast section, called Kinogaya. Karin is currently heading west and in Sakura Bashi. Ishida is in Kasazaki. Ichigo is in Karakura Hon Chou heading south, Rukia and Kon are in Nashiba heading for each other (Kon is going east and Rukia is heading west. Kisuke is north of Chad and east of Rukia in an unnamed section. Finally, Orihime and Tatsuki are in the northeast part, which is called Gakuen Ohou.

Tatsuki and Chizuru can't hurry fast enough and Tatsuki wonders what's up with Orihime. It's not like her to want to leave in the middle of cleaning. Chizuru makes another lesbian pass at Orihime, and Tatsuki ends up punching her in the stomach for it. This distracts Orihime for a moment and when she looks back at the top of the building, the monster is gone. While she's looking for it, Chizuru points out that Tatsuki is still in her karate uniform, so Tatsuki runs off to change and tells Orihime and Chizuru to go on without her despite Orihime trying to stop her. Right after that Orihime realizes the monster (which is actually a hollow) is hovering over her. The hollow asks if she can see it and the Chizuru asks her what's wrong. She tells Chizuru to run. Chizuru is confused, however, and doesn't run while the hollow shoots some seeds out of its head. Orihime doesn't get hit, but it does break more windows, explaining how the windows got broken earlier. Unfortunately Chizuru also got hit in the shoulder. She says she might be bleeding a lot, but it doesn't hurt much and tries to cheer Orihime up. But then the hand attached to her hurt shoulder grabs Orihime by the neck against Chizuru's will and she can't make it let go. It starts choking Orihime. Meanwhile, the hollow explains this is its power - the ability to shoot seeds into people and take over their bodies. As it speaks, more classmates get up, taken over by the seeds, and Chizuru punches Orihime in the face, again against her will. All of the classmates start grabbing at Orihime but then Tatsuki comes to rescue and apologizes to Orihime, saying she didn't see that thing earlier. It turns out that like Chad, she can see a haze where the hollow is. She then challenges the hollow, saying that she beats up anyone who makes Orihime cry.

Tatsuki is taking care of the taken-over students left and right with her karate skills. The hollow isn't phased, though, and includes Chizuru, who's not entirely taken over, in the next wave of attackers. Chizuru, with tears streaming down her face, tells Tatsuki to run as she grabs her shoulder. But instead she gets grabbed at shot in the stomach with a seed. Then we see the title page: Tatsuki wearing a sleeveless button-up collared shirt that's unbuttoned at the midriff.

Orihime has been grabbed as well, and the hollow gloats as it explains the seed will take over Tatsuki's body. It starts thinking of options to punish Tatsuki for interfering with Orihime (#1 is getting raped by all the boys and then hang herself and #2 is stripping naked, hanging herself from the school roof, and then cutting the ropes so she falls to her death.) It gets distracted by Orihime struggling before it can think of #3, though, and makes her classmates slam her face into the ground. It then decides to have Tatsuki think about her own death, but Tatsuki tells it to shut up and let Orihime go. The hollow points out that it holds Tatsuki's life in its tentacles and caresses her cheek, only to have Tatsuki clamp down on the tentacle. She keeps hanging on even when it waves the tentacles around, and the hollow decides to kill Tatsuki immediately and shoots her again. Afraid for Tatsuki's life, Orihime manages to extract herself from her classmates' grasp and runs over to Tatsuki, who has collapsed. Tatsuki doesn't want Orihime to cry, but when Orihime gets closer she sees Tatsuki got shot right in the head. Tatsuki, who is now under the hollow's control, kicks Orihime straight in the stomach.

Orihime thinks back to middle school. Her brother, Sora, loved her hair because of its color, so she had grown it out ever since she was little. But soon after she entered middle school some third years cut it because they said they didn't like the color. She couldn't bear to tell her brother, so she lied saying she felt like a change, but soon after he died and she was alone. She stopped talking at all at school, that is until she met Tatsuki. Tatsuki yelled at Orihime for backing down and protected her, so she could grow out her hair long. So, she's grateful to Tatsuki for the last three years and doesn't want her to cry. As Tatsuki's grabbing her collar, she touches Tatsuki's face and says she'll protect Tatsuki this time. Then the hairpins her brother gave her flash and fly apart. The hollow has no idea what's going on. When the smoke clears, Orihime says she won't forgive the hollow for hurting Tatsuki.

The last page shows a princess with arms spread out standing in front of a dragon lying on the ground, protecting it.

The hollow asks Inoue what those small things flying around her are, and it seems like she only just noticed the small paper airplane like objects. Then Orihime hears voices saying she must have been aware of them since they stay nearest to her. They then land and introduce themselves as the Shun Shun Rikka, her power that was born to protect her. For the title page, you see Orihime standing with a stern look on her face, her hair blowing in the wind, a flower resembling one of her hairpins tucked into her belt.

At first Orihime thinks they're flying midgits, but then the captain of the Shun Shun Rikka explains again that they're her power (which was awoken by outside influences) and as such part of her. Orihime catches it because she doesn't understand its explanation, but it goes on to say that most people can't see them. Only people like Ichigo, who was the one who brought them into being. But her explanation gets interrupted by the sixth member kicking her and saying it's not the time for nice introductions. He then starts explaining how to use the Shun Shun Rikka. Their basic function is to shield and repel things. For that she needs her mind and an incantation. This, however, just confuses Orihime, and they don't have much time since the hollow is moving in to attack. Luckily the captain leads her through it by saying the encantations for her.

First she has to say the 3 shield fairies' names and then an encantation: "Hinagiku, Baigon, Lilly, santen kesshun. I repel thee!" And with that those 3 fairies form a triangle-shaped shield between her an enemy to repel the attack. Next she's led through the healing encantation with 2 of the fairies (including the captain, Shunou): "Shunou, Ayame, souten kisshuh. I repel thee!" With that they fly to Tatsuki's head and feet and form a cocoon-like "shield" between them (and around Tatsuki), healing her. Finally she has the aggressive fairy attack by saying, "Tsubaki, koten zanshun. I repel thee!" And with that he flies right through the hollow, splitting in two by setting up a "shield" inside the hollow and repelling the substance around the "shield." Orihime's glad that she did it, but immediately collapses from the strain of using all three of her abilities in one sitting. Then the Shun Shun Rikka revert to her hairpins and drop on the ground by her. After that Urahara and Tessai, who is carrying Chad on his shoulder, arrive.

The last scene shows one of the Shun Shun Rikka flying and saying we protect you.
